When the water stopped, the community flowed

A frozen water line sparked a warm response from PATB members.
The deep freeze that followed last week’s snow and ice storm left many of us reaching for extra blankets and warm drinks. Many of us were looking forward to the upcoming Janus Gathering, hosted by PATB President Joyce. For Joyce however, it brought a more serious challenge. By Friday, the groundwater feeding her stone farmhouse had frozen. The lights were on, the heat was working—but not a single drop of water came from the taps.
By Tuesday, as the Events Committee prepared for its monthly meeting, word reached members that help was needed. Offers of meals and lodging came quickly from multiple committee members. Joyce, ever resourceful, assured everyone she was safe and warm. What she did need was simple but urgent: help managing a growing pile of dishes and hauling water from outside so daily life could continue.
The response was immediate and practical. Wednesday’s committee meeting was brief, and action followed. Margo, Jeanne, and Kelly headed to Joyce’s home and got to work, rolling up their sleeves and tackling the task together. Patty and others cheered them on from afar, reminding us that support comes in many forms.
Before long, the situation felt manageable again. What had seemed overwhelming only days earlier became just another challenge met—with teamwork, care, and community spirit.
Joyce shared these words of thanks: “Thank you all so very much! What a team! I was just getting to the end of my rope and now I am back on track. This is the real time bank world… thank you again and again!”
Moments like this show what time banking truly means: when one of us faces a difficulty, others step forward. Even in the coldest week of winter, community keeps the warmth flowing.
If you have a story of how the Time Bank has helped you and showed you you were not alone, let us know! We'd love to share it in a series we're calling "Tales from the Time Bank".
