What is a Time Bank?

Updated: Aug 19, 2018

Time banking is a simple concept. And a powerful action.

If you think you're too busy to time bank, think again. You may be too busy not to.

Most people use a bank to hold their money. And today, banks make it easy to deposit your hard-earned cash, make withdrawals to cover your necessary and not-so-necessary expenses, and put a little away in a savings account.

A time bank is pretty much the same. You deposit hours that you earn by helping other people, and you withdraw those hours when you need help with something you might otherwise pay cold cash to get done by professionals.

So that's the time part. Very simple.

The more important part of time banking involves your talents and skills. "But I don't really have any talents," you groan. Sure you do! In fact, as a Time Bank member you'll discover that you have more talents than you every imagined.

Same thing with skills. You may think you only know how to change a lightbulb. But changing a lightbulb may be just what your neighbor needs! And his neighbor may think that the only thing she can do is knit. Bingo! You always wanted to learn to knit!

In addition to helping each other, time bankers help others in our community who may not be Time Bank members. In fact, the Phoenixville Area Time Bank encourages its members to volunteer with helping organizations and bank those hours for the members' personal use.

Time banking is a simple concept. And a powerful action. At the Phoenixville area Time Bank our goal is the strengthen our community by getting people off the couch and away from screens to discover their passion for helping others...and getting help in return.

We believe - in fact, our data proves - that, as the number of hours invested in our community increases each year, the impact on our community grows.

If you think you're too busy to time bank, think again. You may be too busy not to.
